I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness.
John 8:12
Reader, create with me this story! A daughter decides to leave home. She does not know where she will go or how she will feed herself. If I can just get away from my parents, she thinks. She goes to a big city. Excitement at the idea of meeting the rich and famous goads her on. Obsessed with self-reliance, she works first as a waitress, then as a pho-tographer. By a misfortune, she loses her savings. Then she loses her job. Soon she is destitute, but still she does not call home. Where will you take the story from here, reader?
Now, suppose a friend calls her. “Come with me to the Friday night Bible study. I know of Someone who can lift you up. We’ll share a meal together. I guarantee you He can see you through this difficult time. You are not alone.” At the Bible study, the daughter reads for herself the Savior’s promise, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). She ponders on this light.
The encouragement from her wholesome new friends strengthens her. Christ’s promises begin to enlighten her heart. Perhaps I, too, may be called a child of God, she thinks.
Lord and Savior, lead us to where You want us to be. Enlighten us with Your salvation. Amen.
